Broadmeadows Startups Confront Unemployment and Limited Local Tech Infrastructure This Year

Broadmeadows startups continue to operate amid elevated unemployment rates, even as Hume City Council advances dedicated spaces and funding streams for entrepreneurs. The Broadmeadows Town Hall conversion into a $20 million mixed-use venue targets professional offices and mentorship to tackle that unemployment directly.

The push arrives at a time when local businesses need affordable space and training to scale, particularly for migrant and refugee founders who form a core part of the precinct's startup activity. Without sustained support, the small number of existing firms risks remaining constrained by the suburb's narrow base of registered IT companies.

StartNorth and the Town Hall Refurbishment

StartNorth, Hume City Council's coworking space at 12 Dimboola Road, operates 24 hours a day and sits directly across from Broadmeadows Railway Station. Membership there rose from 20 to 50 after the Innovation Festival, and businesses using the facility have generated 22 new local jobs. The same program received a $46,000 LaunchVic grant to run an accelerator for up to 15 migrant and refugee entrepreneurs housed inside StartNorth.

The Town Hall project, partially backed by a $14.3 million government package that includes $7 million for the refurbishment, will add affordable office rentals and professional space in the Broadmeadows Metropolitan Activity Centre. These steps build on the Broadmeadows Revitalisation Project, which secured over $3.3 million from the Australian Government to grow local businesses and create jobs.

Additional Capital and Persistent Constraints

The former Ford assembly site sold to Pelligra Group for over $75 million will become Assembly Broadmeadows, a technology and industrial centre slated to inject $500 million into the area. Hume City Council is also directing a $6 million state investment toward upgrades on Barry Road, Olsen Place and Mahoneys Road to strengthen multicultural business strips.

Despite these inflows, the precinct still lists only one registered IT company providing web and software services. A feasibility study for an assistive technology hub remains in development, and the Hume Tech School at the Bendigo Kangan Institute campus is not scheduled to open until Term 3 2026. Operators at StartNorth and similar programs can monitor membership trends and job-creation numbers while preparing applications for any new accelerator rounds announced by LaunchVic or Hume City Council.
