La Trobe Launch Highlights Investment Pathways for Bundoora Startups
The new IGNITE Lab opening connects local life sciences firms to international infrastructure and follows the federal government's A$1 billion innovation statement.
How we reported this

La Trobe University in Bundoora will open the IGNITE Lab on Thursday, July 16, 2026, as a co-innovation hub with the Bangalore Bioinnovation Centre. The facility will link Australian and Indian life sciences startups in healthcare, agriculture, biotech and clean tech.
The arrangement gives Australian companies access to Indian infrastructure while Indian firms gain entry to La Trobe research facilities. Four Australian startups already taking part in a two-week Auspad Immersion Programme residency at the Bundoora site are Microbs Scientific & Biological, IMonix, Charesi Health Ltd and Volta Innovation Pvt. Their work focuses on product development for global markets.
Policy backdrop for capital access
The federal government's A$1 billion innovation statement contains more than 20 policies aimed at unlocking early-stage investment and drawing international talent. The statement was released in 2024/2025 and directly supports programs that pair local research institutions with overseas partners.
Bundoora sits on the Bangalore-Melbourne Innovation Corridor, established in 2024, which positions the suburb as a node for bioinnovation and deep tech activity. The corridor supplies the physical and virtual links that allow startups to move between laboratory space and manufacturing capacity on two continents.
Practical steps for participating firms
Startups seeking residency at the IGNITE Lab can apply through La Trobe University channels listed on the project site. The virtual residency component allows firms to maintain their primary base while using shared facilities for specific development phases.
Local companies already in the Auspad Immersion Programme are using the two-week period to refine prototypes and map regulatory pathways in both markets. Further cohorts are expected to follow the same schedule after the July 16 inauguration.
