Altonale 2026 brings 200+ free events to Hamburg's Altona district

Hamburg's Altona district will transform into a sprawling cultural stage from June 12 to June 21, 2026, when the altonale festival returns with more than 200 events spanning music, theatre, film, art, literature, dance and street art. Organisers have set this year's motto as 'Vor aller Augen' (In Plain Sight), a theme that runs through programming designed to bring the neighbourhood's creative energy into public spaces.

Where and When to Go

The festival hub sits at Platz der Republik, directly in front of Altona Town Hall, with activities spread across nearly 40,000 square metres of indoor and outdoor venues in the Altona-Altstadt and Ottensen quarters. Most events are free or follow a 'pay what you want' pricing model, making the festival accessible to a wide audience. According to Hamburg's tourism office, the altonale draws roughly 200,000 visitors each year.

Concurrent Street Arts Festival

Running alongside the main programme from June 19 to June 21 is the STAMP Festival, an international street arts event that brings performers and installations onto the streets of Ottensen. The overlap means the final weekend is the most intense, as the altonale's own large street festival and flea market coincide with STAMP's outdoor performances.

What to See Along the Cultural Mile

Regular attendees know the altonale flea market is a highlight, offering vintage goods and handmade wares. The art mile on Christianswiese provides a dedicated zone for visual artists to display and sell work, while the Buntes Altona information mile gives visitors the chance to meet local clubs, initiatives and cultural organisations. The programme also includes film screenings in pop-up venues, dance performances and literary readings staged in courtyards and on streets.

First-time visitors should plan to spend at least half a day exploring the Ottensen neighbourhood, where many venues are clustered within walking distance. Because most events are free and held outdoors, no advance booking is required for the bulk of the programme, though some indoor shows may have capacity limits.
