Altona History Project Uncovers Two Communities Sharing One Name

In 2025 the Town of Altona in Manitoba launched a multi-phase history project funded by the municipal budget to document local stories from the 1870s to today.

Project Focuses on Indigenous and Immigration Themes

The initiative highlights themes including Indigenous history and immigration. It covers the period when German-speaking Mennonites emigrated from Russian Ukraine to settle on the ancestral homeland of Anishinaabeg, Cree, and Métis Nations, land that was historically tall grass prairie. The town itself was first settled by Mennonites in 1880 and incorporated in 1956.

Distinct Origins of the Two Altonas

The Manitoba community shares its name with a suburb in Victoria, Australia, first permanently settled in 1842 by Alfred Langhorne. That suburb was named in 1861 by Frederick Taegtow, a German from Altona near Hamburg, on land originally inhabited by the Kurung-Jang-Balluk Aboriginal people of the Woiwurrung clan. The two places developed along separate paths after their early settlement periods.

Population Growth Recorded in Victoria's Altona

Victoria's Altona became a suburb during rapid growth between the 1950s and 1980s due to industry and immigration. Its population rose from 6,698 in 1954 to 32,838 in 1986. These documented figures provide concrete markers of change that residents continue to reference when comparing the two locations.
