Coburg Celebrates Summer: Samba Festival Meets 500-Year Shooting Tradition
A look at the city's seasonal festival cycle, from the international stage of the Samba-Festival to the enduring history of the Coburger Vogelschießen.
How we reported this
Coburg’s cultural landscape in the summer of 2026 is defined by a series of long-standing events that span from early spring through the heat of August. This seasonal rhythm reflects the city's tradition of hosting large-scale gatherings that blend international music, youth-focused artistic initiatives, and historic regional celebrations. Each festival plays a distinct role in the city's annual calendar, marking the transition of the summer months.
The International Samba-Festival and the Castle Square
The city's mid-July cultural peak was headlined by the International Samba-Festival Coburg, which took place from July 10 to July 12, 2026. Recognised as the largest samba festival outside of Brazil, the event drew approximately 180,000 visitors and featured 3,000 sambistas, according to festival organisers. Following this influx of international visitors, the city transitioned to the 40th Schlossplatzfest Coburg, or Castle Square Festival. Running from July 16 to July 20, 2026, the Castle Square Festival features more than 170 shows across two stages, supported by over 800 artists. Notably, this 40th-anniversary edition introduced free admission for the first time, expanding public access to the diverse programming held at the historic site.
Youth Innovation and Regional Heritage
Beyond the major summer spectacles, the city's cultural scene has integrated new initiatives like Composit 2.0. Held from July 2 to July 7, 2026, this youth culture and theater festival was organised through a partnership between the Cosmos Youth Culture Center and the Landestheater Coburg. These efforts complement the established seasonal schedule, which officially began earlier this year with the Spring Festival Coburg held from April 24 to May 3, 2026. That event, which featured live music and free admission, traditionally sets the tone for the summer months.
As the city moves toward the end of the summer season, the focus shifts to the 672nd Coburger Vogelschießen. Scheduled to take place at the Ketschenanger fairground from July 31 to August 9, 2026, the event represents the region's oldest and largest Volksfest. Residents and visitors can look forward to the continuation of these traditions as the city concludes its summer programming in August.
