Local Initiative Transforms Footscray Into Thriving Independent Arts Hub

The Footscray Community Arts Centre has run for fifty years as an independent precinct on the Maribyrnong River, hosting exhibitions, live music, theatre and community-led programs year-round.

Foundations at the Arts Centre

Residents built the centre into a year-round hub that continues to anchor the local arts scene through its own exhibitions and performances. The precinct draws on decades of consistent local input to maintain its role as the primary gathering point for creative activity in the area.

Additional Venues and Expressions

Five Walls operates as an independent gallery inside a converted mid-century arcade and presents Abstraction and Non-Objective art during its Wednesday-to-Saturday hours of noon to 5pm. Prominent street art appears throughout residential, retail and commercial zones, including the Footscray Community Arts Precinct, and records the suburb’s diverse immigrant history in visible form. Experimental work takes place at the Footscray Drill Hall, where Snuff Puppets stage performances, and at the Footscray Library, which hosts experimental music events.

Redevelopment Underway

A redevelopment of the Footscray Community Arts Centre, valued at 8.7 million dollars, is creating a new outdoor performance space that includes weather protection. The project is expected to open to the public in late 2025. This work extends the existing facilities that have supported the scene for half a century.
