Berwick Schools Install Metal Detectors; Parks Unveil New E-Waste Collection
Initial delays from metal detectors have eased while decisions on park access and an upcoming e-waste collection shape local routines.
How we reported this

New metal detectors at Berwick high school and middle school produced long entry lines on the first day of use but allowed all students inside by the usual time the following morning.
The change matters now because families and staff are still settling into the adjusted morning routine while other safety measures move forward in public spaces.
Park access and safety upgrades
Borough council decided to keep Sponsler Park closed until security cameras are operating, with the closure beginning the morning after the vote. Police leadership stated the cameras will monitor activity once installed.
Repeated vandalism already removed the Little Free Pantry from the same park, leaving residents without that resource until further notice.
Recycling event and housing plans
Mamoth Recycling will hold an E-Waste Recycling Day on June 6 at its site inside the BIDA Complex on Power House Road, run in partnership with a state representative. A vacant lot that previously held mobile homes is also set to receive two new townhouses, each containing two units, to address local housing needs.
Berwick Area High School student Brooke Goy earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honour in the program. Separately, the executive director of the Berwick Industrial Development Association began a new role at the county community college.
Police have reminded riders that e-bikes and electric scooters count as motor vehicles, meaning riders under 16 are not permitted and certain traffic rules apply. Two people already facing forgery charges in a neighbouring area now face additional forgery counts in Berwick.
Residents can check the status of Sponsler Park once cameras are confirmed in place, prepare items for the June 6 e-waste collection, and monitor council updates on the townhouse project through the BIDA office.
