Berwick Education Restructuring: What Happens Next and the Key Decisions Ahead
Northumberland County Council will close three middle schools on August 31 2026 while Berwick Academy shifts to an 11-18 model amid unresolved funding shortfalls.
How we reported this
Northumberland County Council will close Berwick Middle School, Tweedmouth Middle School and Glendale Middle School on August 31 2026 as it ends the three-tier system and moves to primary and secondary schools only.
Why the Changes Matter Now
The restructuring affects every family with children currently in the middle-school years because Berwick Academy must accept pupils from age 11 from September 2026 onward. Northumberland County Council holds responsibility for education across the area, so the decisions on school organisation and capital spending rest with the county rather than Berwick Town Council.
Berwick Academy Transition and Facilities
Berwick Academy will change from a 13-18 high school to an 11-18 secondary academy starting September 2026. The new building is planned with specialised facilities for pupils with special educational needs including SEMH, ASD, SLCN and MLD, plus training amenities for students aged over 16. Pupils will continue to use the existing buildings on the current site while construction proceeds.
Funding Shortfall and Cost Figures
The Department for Education refused the council’s request for £13 million, lifting the project cost from £59 million to £64 million and requiring the council to find an extra £5 million locally. Northumberland County Council has committed a total of £50 million to the wider Berwick schools masterplan, which also includes converting first schools into primaries and adding a 30-place neuro-divergent provision at Berwick St Mary’s.
Key Decisions Ahead
Construction of the new Berwick Academy is scheduled to start in summer 2027 with an opening target of September 2028. The council must now decide how to meet the additional £5 million contribution and how to manage the phased move of pupils from the closing middle schools into the new 11-18 structure. Families will need to follow county communications on catchment arrangements and transition support once the final funding package is confirmed.
