Northumberland County Council has released two potential designs for a new Berwick Academy valued at £42 million, marking the latest stage in a planned move from a three-tier to a two-tier school system across the Berwick area.

Origins of the Reorganisation

The decision to reorganise stems from a long-running review of education provision in the area. Berwick, Tweedmouth and Glendale Middle Schools are set to close on 31 August 2026. First schools will expand into primary schools from September 2025, while Berwick Academy is scheduled to operate as an 11-18 secondary academy from September 2026. This sequence of changes forms the core of the transition to a two-tier model.

Cost Pressures and Funding Setbacks

Project costs have increased during the planning process. The estimated cost for the new high school has risen from £59 million to £64 million after a £13 million funding request to the Department for Education was turned down. These figures illustrate the financial path that has led to the current design proposals and timeline.

Construction is hoped to begin in summer 2027, with the aim of opening the facility in September 2028. The separate Berwick Area School District in Pennsylvania approved its 2025-26 budget with a 2.5 per cent property tax increase on 16 June, but that decision relates to a distinct US entity and does not form part of the Northumberland process.
