Berwick Schools Metal Detectors: Safety Update

Berwick high school and middle school students encountered new metal detectors at building entrances on a Tuesday morning, creating longer waits than usual before classes began. Staff reported that by the next day entry times had returned to normal. The superintendent had announced the devices would start operating that Tuesday.

Safety steps affect parks and riders

Borough council voted Monday night to shut Sponsler Park starting the following morning until security cameras could be installed. The Little Free Pantry that stood in the park has already been removed after repeated vandalism. Police Chief Reagan Rafferty also reminded residents that e-bikes and electric scooters count as motor vehicles, meaning riders under 16 are not permitted to operate them.

An e-waste collection day is scheduled for Saturday, June 6, at the Mamoth Recycling facility inside the BIDA Complex at 117 Power House Rd. The event is organized in partnership with Rep. Robert. Separately, a developer plans to build two new townhouses, each containing two units, on a vacant lot that previously held two mobile homes.

Personnel moves and other cases

Kelly O’Brien, former executive director of the Berwick Industrial Development Association, began work Friday as vice president at Luzerne County Community College. In a separate matter, Edward Crilly, 35, of 846 Jefferson St., Bloomsburg, faces additional forgery charges in Berwick after earlier accusations in Catawissa. Brooke Goy, a Berwick Area High School student and daughter of Paul and, earned the Girl Scout Gold Award.
