Officials Outline Bus Route Reliability and Local Traffic Plans in Broadmeadows

Transport planners have noted the December 17 shift of Route 538 to a direct path along Camp Road as a way to cut delays for Somerset Estate riders. The change skips Holberry, Walsh, Graham and Widford streets while keeping a 40-minute frequency on weekdays and weekends. Public Transport Victoria records show six extra afternoon trips added each way on Saturdays.

Car travel still accounts for 75 percent of commutes in the suburb, compared with 14 percent by train and 5 percent by bus, according to the same data set that lists 94 active stops across 26 routes. Average distance to the nearest stop sits at 242 metres, supporting roughly 7,882 weekly passenger trips. These figures have prompted local officials to examine both bus adjustments and road safety measures at the same time.

Camp Road Changes and Station Works

Route 538 now serves Somerset Estate residents more directly, with planners citing improved journey reliability as the main outcome. Broadmeadows Station upgrades include four new Myki readers, a new entrance ramp, revamped toilets and better lighting in the pedestrian subway, with work listed for completion by early October. The Craigieburn line station handles Metro Trains, V/Line services to Seymour, Albury and Shepparton, plus the NSW TrainLink XPT to Sydney.

Hume City Council has allocated $250,000 in the 2025/26 budget for the Broadmeadows North Local Area Traffic Management plan. The funding targets traffic speeds, pedestrian safety and connectivity in that neighbourhood. Officials have linked the spending to ongoing resident feedback on east-west links and station access.
