Broadmeadows Bus Route 538 and Station Upgrades Move Forward

Broadmeadows residents gained faster bus access this month after Route 538 began travelling direct along Camp Road from Somerset Estate to Broadmeadows railway station. The change, introduced on 17 December, eliminated previous detours and added six extra afternoon trips on Saturdays while maintaining a 40-minute frequency.

The updated Route 538 now provides a straighter path to the station, cutting travel times for commuters from Somerset Estate. Public transport data shows Broadmeadows has 94 active stops served by 26 routes, supporting roughly 7,882 weekly passenger trips across bus and train services. Average distance to the nearest stop stands at 242 metres.

Station upgrades and regional connections

Broadmeadows railway station on the Craigieburn line continues to receive upgrades including new MYKI readers, a new ramp, revamped toilets and improved lighting in the pedestrian subway. Works are scheduled for completion by early October. The station also handles V/Line services to Seymour and Albury plus NSW TrainLink XPT trains to Sydney.

Local traffic management and future plans

Hume City Council advanced its Local Area Traffic Management plan, first proposed in 2023, with $250,000 allocated for the 2025/26 financial year to address speeds, pedestrian links and parking. Car travel remains the main mode at 75 percent of commutes, followed by train at 14 percent and bus at 5 percent. The suburb sits near the M80 Freeway without westbound access and connects to Melbourne International Airport five kilometres away via SmartBus route 901.
