Broadmeadows Residents Demand Better Transport and Traffic Solutions
Daily travel patterns and recent service adjustments prompt discussion among local users of buses, trains and roads.
How we reported this

Broadmeadows maintains 94 active public transport stops served by 26 bus routes and train services that record approximately 7,882 weekly passenger trips. Cars account for 75 percent of resident commuting trips, with trains at 14 percent and buses at 5 percent.
Daily Travel Patterns
These figures show that most residents continue to rely on private vehicles despite the presence of multiple bus and train options. The Broadmeadows railway station on the Craigieburn line provides Metro Trains services to Flinders Street Station every 20 minutes, with a journey time of 35 minutes, alongside V/Line and NSW TrainLink services to regional destinations.
Recent Service Changes
Route 538 now runs direct along Camp Road from Somerset Estate to Broadmeadows, a change introduced on 17 December that delivers faster journeys and adds six afternoon trips each Saturday. The service operates every 40 minutes on weekdays and weekends. The suburb sits 5 km from Melbourne International Airport and is linked by SmartBus route 901, though it lacks westbound access to the M80 Freeway.
Station Upgrades and Council Funding
Station improvements at Broadmeadows include new MYKI readers, a new ramp, revamped toilets and improved pedestrian subway lighting, with works expected to finish by early October. Hume City Council proposed a Local Area Traffic Management plan in 2023 that includes $250,000 in funding allocated for the 2025/26 period to address traffic speeds, pedestrian connectivity and parking.
Planned Infrastructure
Future projects listed for the area include the Suburban Rail Loop North station at Broadmeadows together with the Hume Central Redevelopment. These elements form the current framework for transport and traffic considerations in the suburb.
