Camberwell transport rules and schemes set stage for upcoming council and TfL decisions

Transport for London put a Red Route Consolidation Traffic Order into force on A202 Camberwell Station Road on 12 December 2025, changing single red lines to double red lines that ban stopping at any time.

The order arrived after Camberwell Station Road public realm works finished in summer 2024. Those works added segregated cycle lanes, traffic calming and Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems that began construction in winter 2023. Residents and drivers now face stricter enforcement on the same stretch that received the new layout.

Current measures under watch

Transport for London continues to monitor the Camberwell Green safety scheme for impacts and possible future changes. Southwark Council has separately proposed making the one-way closure of Champion Hill permanent to cut through-traffic and improve safety in the town centre. The SE5 Forum transport action plan lists reopening Camberwell Station on New Road and better access at Denmark Hill Station as priorities alongside a Town Centre Scheme that would reduce motor vehicles and widen footways.

Denmark Hill station received a £7.5 million carbon-positive upgrade with a new entrance and 85-space cycle hub. A separate £1.5 million Greater London Authority Good Growth Fund allocation supports landscaping on Station Road, conversion of empty railway arches into business units and better links to the station. TfL has already confirmed that proposed changes to bus routes 12, 45, 148 and 171 will not go ahead, preserving the 12 and 45 services for now.

Decisions still required

Southwark Council must decide whether to confirm the Champion Hill one-way system as a permanent arrangement. Transport for London will need to set out any next steps once monitoring data from the Camberwell Green scheme is assessed. The SE5 Forum plan remains on the table as a reference for those choices, while the preserved bus routes remove one immediate pressure on local services.
