Croydon Education Leaders Highlight New Funding and School Expansion Challenges

Croydon Council has identified an additional 728 children eligible for Pupil Premium funding, securing nearly £979,000 in extra annual revenue for local schools, officials confirmed this week.

The discovery of these eligible pupils arrives as the borough faces a significant surge in demand for secondary school places, with forecasts projecting the need for 4,200 new places-or 140 additional forms of entry-by the 2027/28 school year, marking the largest secondary expansion requirement among London boroughs.

Meeting the Growing Demand for School Places

Local education authorities say the challenge of accommodating this sharp rise in pupil numbers requires careful management of existing school capacity and ongoing investment. Croydon Council is currently reviewing its Education and SEND Estates Strategies to address surplus places and enhance support for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), as outlined in publicly available council documents.

This review includes consideration of a proposed Schools' Maintenance Plan aimed at upgrading educational facilities to better serve the borough’s growing student population.

Officials emphasize that along with expanding standard school places, there is also a pressing need to develop SEND provisions. Investment in this area includes a fully funded £13.5 million expansion at Addington Valley Academy, a specialist SEN school, as well as plans for a new SEN Centre of Excellence at Croydon Further Education College. These measures are designed to create better tailored educational environments for children requiring additional support.

Improving School Environments and Accessibility

Croydon Council is also pursuing 11 new 'Healthy School Street' schemes to improve pupil safety and encourage active travel such as walking and cycling near schools. These proposals build on 24 existing schemes currently implemented across the borough, reflecting an ongoing commitment to creating safer, healthier routes for students.

Experts within the council and partner organisations stress that such street-level improvements not only enhance safety but also support public health goals by promoting physical activity. Stakeholder consultations are underway to fine-tune these plans, with the community invited to provide input on design and implementation approaches.

The combination of expanded school places, improved SEND facilities, and safer school environments forms a multi-pronged response to the pressure on Croydon’s education infrastructure in the coming years.
