How Doncaster Arrived at Its Latest Road and Transport Funding Commitments
Years of national programmes and local strategies have shaped the borough's current approach to road maintenance and connectivity projects.
How we reported this
Doncaster's Cabinet approved a Capital Strategy and Budget for 2026/27 to 2029/30 that sets out £549.3 million in investment over four years, including £60.4 million specifically allocated to road maintenance.
The decision reflects a longer sequence of funding decisions that began with Doncaster's inclusion in the UK Government's Long-Term Plan for Towns. That programme provides an endowment-style fund of nearly £20 million over ten years, directed at transport connectivity, high streets and town centre regeneration. The borough's Infrastructure Strategy has since confirmed oven-ready priorities that align with the separate national £1.5 billion South Yorkshire transport investment, which targets upgrades to the M18 and franchised bus services.
Levelling Up allocations add targeted projects
Earlier Levelling Up Fund rounds supplied £18.6 million for the Civic Quarter and Waterfront and £17.95 million for improvements in Doncaster North. These awards sit alongside a separate £16 million Levelling Up initiative for Mexborough and Moorends, where £12.5 million is directed at Mexborough town centre improvements and £4 million at Moorends developments, with work due to conclude by March 2027. The Infrastructure Funding Statement for 2023-24 recorded 17 successful Section 106 agreements that have already helped fund new or upgraded infrastructure across the borough.
The pattern shows repeated use of central-government programmes to address longstanding local connectivity needs. Road maintenance funding within the new capital strategy therefore continues work already under way through the South Yorkshire transport investment and the Mexborough-Moorends scheme, which includes measures such as changes to parking provision and town-centre access.
Next steps rest on existing programmes
Implementation will continue through the four-year capital programme and the remaining years of the Long-Term Plan for Towns allocation. Residents can expect further updates on individual schemes as the council draws down the earmarked road maintenance funds and completes the Mexborough and Moorends works by the March 2027 target.
