Doncaster Council Secures Funding for Rail and Road Networks

Doncaster's Cabinet approved a Capital Strategy and Budget for 2026/27 to 2029/30 that sets out a £549.3 million investment programme over four years, of which £60.4 million is allocated to road maintenance. The borough also participates in the UK Government's Long-Term Plan for Towns, receiving an endowment-style fund of nearly £20 million over ten years that targets transport connectivity alongside high-street and town-centre work. The Borough's Infrastructure Strategy aligns these local priorities with the national £1.5 billion South Yorkshire transport investment, which includes upgrades to the M18 and franchised bus services.
Existing rail and road layout
Doncaster railway station operates as a major interchange on the East Coast Main Line with ten platforms, handling 64 daily trains to London in approximately one hour 35 minutes and more than 100 trains in total each day. The A1(M) bypass to the west carries frequent congestion, while the M18 to the south generally maintains free-flowing conditions. Local bus operations centre on Frenchgate Interchange, where First Bus X78 runs every 15 minutes between Sheffield and Doncaster and operators including Arriva and Stagecoach provide additional services.
Current project delivery
A £12 million transport scheme for East Doncaster is funded to replace two roundabouts with signalised crossroads on A18 Thorne Road, introduce bus priority measures and increase road capacity. These measures sit alongside the Gateway One works near the station, where the lane closure on West Street and Trafford Way is scheduled for completion in December 2026. The Infrastructure Funding Statement for 2023-24 records 17 successful Section 106 agreements that have secured contributions to mitigate development impacts on local infrastructure.
Further Levelling Up Fund allocations have supported transport-linked regeneration, including £18.6 million for the Civic Quarter and Waterfront and £17.95 million for improvements in Doncaster North.
