Council Approves Wren Street Dwellings and Opens Transport Strategy Consultation

Hobsons Bay Council approved a development of seven three-storey dwellings at 55 Wren Street in Altona by a vote of 4 to 3. The decision sets the scale of new housing that will be built on that specific site and determines how many additional households will use local roads and services in the immediate area.

The same council endorsed a draft Integrated Transport Strategy for Altona. A six-week community consultation period runs from 17 June to 28 July 2026, giving residents the opportunity to comment on proposed changes to roads, paths and public transport connections that affect daily travel within Altona.

Altona North precinct redevelopment

The Altona North precinct covers a 67-hectare former industrial site. Plans call for its conversion into a mixed-use residential neighbourhood that will contain approximately 3,000 new dwellings over 20 years. This long-term project determines the amount of new housing stock and the supporting infrastructure that will be available to Altona residents over the coming two decades.

These planning choices directly influence the number of homes, the layout of streets and the availability of transport options that Altona residents use for work, shopping and other daily activities. Smaller approvals such as the Wren Street project add limited new dwellings on established streets, while the Altona North redevelopment adds a larger number of dwellings on a former industrial site over an extended period.

The Altona North redevelopment continues according to the 20-year timeline already set for the precinct.
