Berwick City Council Votes to Freeze Council Tax Rates for 2026-27, Holding Household Payments Steady

Berwick City Council passed its 2026-27 budget on July 7 with an 8-3 vote that freezes the council tax rate multiplier applied to all residential properties. The resolution covers the base rate component charged to owners and tenants and takes effect for notices issued from late July onward.

The decision follows the presentation of draft figures in May that showed rising costs for road repairs and waste services. Councillors reviewed revenue options against those outlays before adopting the final document, which leaves the rate multiplier unchanged from the current year.

Consequences for local household spending

Households in Berwick will pay the same annual sum for services funded by council tax, including kerbside collection, footpath upkeep and community facilities. A property in the town centre, for instance, will see no added charge on its first instalment due in August, allowing the same sum to remain available for other regular outgoings.

Local advocates note that the unchanged rate leaves the calculation method set out in the council's rating strategy unaltered. The legislation states that the amount is derived from property value multiplied by the fixed rate, so bills reflect only any change in assessed value rather than a higher multiplier.

Council budget papers record that rates revenue supports the majority of day-to-day operations listed in the operating statement. The adopted figures project that revenue line to stay level for existing assessments, with any new properties entering the roll at the same multiplier.

Rate notices will be posted in the final week of July and payments will follow the standard quarterly schedule. Residents who arrange direct debit will see instalments calculated on the frozen amount beginning in August.
