Mickleham Road Duplication Funding Tied to Craigieburn Infrastructure Contributions Plans
The 2025-26 budget allocation supports road duplication between Dellamore Boulevard and Craigieburn Road while earlier plans set funding rules for local infrastructure.
How we reported this
The Victorian and Federal Labor Governments committed $250 million in the 2025-26 budget to duplicate Mickleham Road from Dellamore Boulevard to Craigieburn Road. This allocation targets the corridor that serves Craigieburn and Mickleham residents who rely on it for daily travel.
The Craigieburn West Infrastructure Contributions Plan was gazetted on 21 January 2022 under Amendment C260 to the Hume Planning Scheme. That plan established funding requirements for local infrastructure in the precinct. The Craigieburn North Employment Precinct Development Contributions Plan was amended in December 2023 to update development staging and infrastructure funding guidance for the 488-hectare employment area.
Road and rail improvements linked to local needs
The Craigieburn Road Upgrade has begun using Reconophalt asphalt containing recycled soft plastics and glass. This marks the first application of the material on the project under Victoria's Recycled First Policy. The Melbourne rail upgrade program, North includes planned track and signalling improvements for the Craigieburn rail line to address capacity and reliability pressures from northern suburbs growth.
Residents in Craigieburn use Mickleham Road and Craigieburn Road for work trips, access to services and connections to employment areas. The duplication and contributions plans set out how infrastructure costs are shared with new development. Rail improvements target reliability on the line that carries Craigieburn commuters.
Next steps for the projects
The government says the Mickleham Road duplication will proceed under the 2025-26 budget commitment. The contributions plans continue to guide infrastructure funding in the designated precincts. Track and signalling work on the Craigieburn rail line forms part of the broader Melbourne rail upgrade program, North.
These measures connect directly to daily movement patterns for Craigieburn households. Road duplication aims to ease pressure on the main corridor. Employment precinct planning sets staged requirements for roads and other facilities that support local jobs. Rail upgrades focus on maintaining service levels as passenger numbers rise on the line.
