Dandenong Mayor Redirects Grants to Aid 3,200 Low-Income Households

The Dandenong City Council adopted the Neighbourhood Services Policy on 1 July 2026, shifting grant distributions from general community events to targeted household utility relief that reaches residents in the central and southern wards first.

Why the Adjustment Occurs Now

Council records show that utility arrears among Dandenong households rose 14 per cent between January and May 2026, prompting the mayor's office to reallocate existing grant lines rather than seek new revenue. The 2026-27 budget paper lists the total redirected amount at $1.8 million drawn from the previous events and festivals envelope.

Under the revised rules, eligible households receive direct credits of up to $320 applied to electricity and water accounts, processed through the council's existing rates database. Families with children enrolled at Dandenong Primary or the local secondary college receive an additional $80 per child when they submit school enrolment verification.

Direct Effects on Daily Costs and Services

Residents who previously applied for one-off event sponsorships will now find those funds unavailable, while those facing overdue utility notices gain a new application pathway open from 15 July. The policy document states that processing times will average 10 working days once forms reach the revenue office on Cleeland Street.

Local advocates note that the change aligns grant spending with the 3,200 households already flagged in council data as holding payment plans longer than 90 days. The government projects that 85 per cent of the $1.8 million will reach accounts before the end of the calendar year.
