Regional Connectivity and Workforce Act Sets Epping Road and Training Allocations

The state legislature passed the Regional Connectivity and Workforce Act last week, which lists Epping among 12 districts eligible for dedicated infrastructure and skills grants. The bill requires the transport department to release $4.8 million for road resurfacing on routes that serve Epping commuters and another $1.9 million for vocational training tied to construction and maintenance roles.

Infrastructure spending tied to daily travel

Residents who drive or take buses along the main corridors through Epping stand to see scheduled repairs begin after the next budget cycle. The legislation states that priority goes to segments with the highest recorded traffic volumes from the most recent state transport survey. Local councils must submit project bids within 90 days of the funding notice.

State budget papers released with the bill show that Epping’s share covers 11 kilometres of pavement work and two bridge inspections. These items appear on the department’s capital works list for the 2027 fiscal year.

Training funds linked to local job listings

The workforce section of the act channels grants through the regional employment office to cover certification courses for heavy equipment operators and road technicians. Policy analysts note that past rounds of similar funding placed 142 participants from comparable districts into positions within six months of course completion.

Applications for the training component open on 1 September. The legislation requires quarterly reporting on enrolment numbers and placement rates back to the legislature’s oversight committee.

Implementation starts once the governor signs the appropriations bill, expected within 10 days. Local government staff in Epping have begun preparing the required documentation for both the road and training streams.
