Moorabbin Council Endorses Local Roads Maintenance Initiative, Prioritising Outer Suburbs Over Central Areas
Residents in the southern and western wards will see targeted repairs to 12 kilometres of local streets starting next quarter, while central business owners face unchanged conditions.
How we reported this
At its July 7 meeting, Moorabbin City Council voted 8-3 to approve the Local Roads Maintenance Initiative, which redirects $1.45 million from the 2026 infrastructure reserve to road resurfacing projects in the southern and western wards.
The decision follows the release of the council's quarterly maintenance audit in June, which identified 47 kilometres of deteriorating local streets across Moorabbin. Policy analysts note that the initiative responds to resident complaints logged through the council's online portal about potholes and drainage issues in those wards.
Impacts for specific wards
Households along Maple Avenue in the western ward will gain new asphalt surfaces on 3.2 kilometres of residential streets by December, reducing vehicle repair costs for commuters who travel daily to the industrial estate. Families in the southern ward near Oak Park can expect improved access to the bus stop at the corner of River Road after drainage upgrades address flooding that has closed the footpath during heavy rain in prior years.
Businesses along the High Street commercial strip in the central ward receive no additional funding under this allocation, leaving their frontage roads subject to the existing schedule that last received major work in 2023. Local advocates note that delivery vehicles serving the strip may continue to encounter uneven surfaces until the next full budget cycle.
The 2026 budget papers list the initiative's total at 12 percent of the roads and footpaths line item, a figure drawn from the council's audited financial statements for the prior fiscal year. This amount covers material and contractor costs for the specified 12 kilometres but excludes any new signage or lighting components.
Implementation begins with tender advertisements in August, followed by construction phases projected to finish by March 2027. Residents in the affected wards can register for project updates through the council's website starting next month.
