Cranbourne Junior Athletes Prepare for Intense Finals Competition Season
Local junior athletes from across the city are gearing up for a packed few months of competition, with school and club programs hitting their peak.
How we reported this
Cranbourne's youth sports calendar is entering a critical stretch. With school athletics carnivals locked in and junior club finals looming, young athletes across the city are preparing for the biggest events of the year.
The timing matters. School Sport Victoria's Casey South Division, where Cranbourne East Secondary College, Cranbourne West Secondary College and Cranbourne Secondary College all compete, runs its interschool programs across multiple terms. For term three, that means athletics is front and centre. Cranbourne West Secondary College lists athletics, basketball and rugby for term three, according to the school's published sport program. Cranbourne East Secondary College offers 18 term sports including AFL, netball, soccer and athletics, plus separate Rugby League and Union competitions.
Athletics Takes Centre Stage at Casey Fields
The Casey Fields Athletics Centre on Berwick-Cranbourne Road in Cranbourne East is the hub. It's where Casey Cardinia Athletics operates its track and field program for athletes aged 12 and over, and where the local secondary schools hold their whole-school athletics carnivals. Cranbourne Secondary College holds three annual carnivals including a whole-school athletics event where students run, jump and throw at Casey Fields. Cranbourne Primary School also trains selected Year 3-6 students for an Athletics Carnival held at the same venue. Lighthouse Christian College in Cranbourne includes athletics in its sports program alongside basketball, netball and swimming.
For primary school athletes, the pathway leads to the Casey Fields Athletics Track. For older juniors, Casey Cardinia Athletics provides the structured track and field opportunities that feed into higher levels of competition.
Club Sports Build Toward Finals
Beyond the school system, Cranbourne's junior clubs are deep into their seasons. The Cranbourne Junior Football Club, the Eagles, with roots dating back to the 1890s, runs structured Auskick and junior football for under-12 and under-14 teams in the Southeast Football League. The senior Cranbourne Football Club, established in 1889, fields teams in the Southern Football Netball League including seniors, reserves, U19 and All Abilities sides.
On the soccer side, the Casey Comets Football Club, founded in 1975 in Cranbourne, offers teams across ages and abilities, with senior men competing in Football Federation Victoria State League 1 South-East. Barton United FC, based at Barton Recreation Reserve in Cranbourne West, provides junior and adult soccer in local leagues. The Casey Warriors Rugby League Club operates at the Casey Fields Rugby League Complex in Cranbourne East, offering junior and senior pathways.
Basketball players can find training at Little Boomers Basketball, which runs programs for boys and girls aged 3-12 at Mirniyan Primary School, focusing on skill development and confidence. Cranbourne Golf Club's Youth Pennant team made history in 2024 by becoming the first to represent the club in Division 1, and recently played a second final in three years against Victoria Golf Club.
The pathways extend to elite level. Six local Cranbourne athletes, four from the Dandenong Stingrays and two from Gippsland Power, were selected for the 2026 AFL/W Academies. The program includes an overseas trip to New Zealand in December 2026.
For families looking to keep young people active during the winter school holidays, the City of Casey is running a free Youth Pop-Up Winter Holiday Program at Casey Fields (Oval 3) in Cranbourne East and at the Cranbourne West Community Hub. The program is for 12-17 year olds and features sports, games and free food.
With athletics carnivals, junior football finals and academy selections all lining up over the coming months, Cranbourne's youth sports scene has plenty to play for.
