Essendon Clubs Boost Participation, Strengthen Neighbourhood Connections

The Essendon District Football League remains the main organiser of local football in the area, with its network of clubs providing regular matches and training across multiple divisions.

League Structure Supports Broad Participation

Founded in 1930, the league currently includes 39 full and associate member clubs spread across six council areas. It runs three divisions for senior men’s teams and three for senior women’s teams. In 2023 the league fielded 30 men’s senior teams and 22 women’s senior teams. From 2024 the league began live broadcasts of games through its partnership with the Streamer platform, giving supporters wider access to matches.

Long-Standing Clubs Anchor Local Sport

Several established clubs operate within the league framework. Essendon Doutta Stars Football Club plays at Buckley Park Reserve. Moonee Valley Football Club was founded in 1933. PEGS Junior Football Club fields teams from under-8s to under-14s in the Western Region Football League. Essendon Royals Soccer Club was established in 1959. The Essendon District Netball Association runs netball competitions in affiliation with the football league and draws members from the same local clubs.

Athletics Essendon, founded in 1897, operates as one of the older track and field and cross-country clubs in the country and is based at the Moonee Valley Athletics Centre. The Essendon Rowing Club and similar groups receive support through the Essendon Football Club’s Annual Grant Program, helping maintain facilities and programs for residents of all ages.

These organisations together create regular training sessions, match days and social activities that link families and neighbours. The combination of football, netball, athletics and rowing gives residents multiple entry points into organised sport without requiring travel outside the immediate area.
