Altona launches hydrogen station, smart parking, solar lighting projects

Altona is becoming a showcase for smart city investment, with multiple projects underway or in development that blend sustainability, technology and urban renewal.
Victoria’s first Hydrogen Refuelling Station is located in Altona, a key project highlighted in Wyndham City Council’s Smart City Communications & Marketing Plan. That plan sits within the council’s broader Smart City Strategy 2019-2024, which prioritises transport, environmental focus and city operations. The hydrogen station is the most prominent Altona-specific initiative in that strategy.
Solar lighting and smart parking
In a separate local project, the City of Hobsons Bay deployed smart solar street lighting on a 160-metre section of Merton Street in Altona. The lighting is designed to improve visibility, public safety and sustainability, and complies with AS/NZS 1158.3.1 V4 standards. No cost or installation date has been publicly released.
Smart parking technology is also being installed across Wyndham City, a city-wide rollout that includes Altona. The system directs drivers to available parking spaces to improve efficiency and reduce congestion. The council’s implementation plan references this as part of its transport efficiency goals under the 2019-2024 strategy.
None of the three projects have disclosed total investment figures or timelines beyond the council’s strategy period.
Hamburg-Altona partnership drives cross-border research
Altona’s smart city story is not limited to Victoria. The Borough of Altona in Hamburg, Germany, is a lead partner in the Interreg research project SUMBA, which develops environmentally sustainable commuter transport concepts for Baltic cities, including Hamburg-Altona. That project involves cross-border collaboration on electric mobility, shared mobility and integrated ticketing.
Hamburg-Altona is also the site of Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld, a major urban development project. The District Office Altona’s Urban and Landscape Planning Department is actively coordinating planning for this initiative with multiple stakeholders. Neither the project’s budget nor its completion date has been publicly detailed.
The twin-city connection, both named Altona, one in Australia and one in Germany, has not led to formal cooperation agreements, but the projects in each location share similar goals of integrating technology into urban infrastructure.
For local residents and businesses, the practical benefits are still taking shape. The hydrogen station could support early adoption of fuel-cell vehicles. The solar lights already improve safety on Merton Street. Smart parking, once fully deployed, may reduce the time spent circling for a space. None of the projects have announced timelines for expansion or follow-on phases.
The trend is clear: Altona is being used as a real-world laboratory for smart city technology, funded by council budgets, state programs and European research grants. Whether the current projects lead to a broader, coordinated smart city plan, or remain a series of standalone experiments, will depend on future funding and political will.
