Clayton Launches Cybersecurity Initiative, Sets Global Digital Resilience Standard
Through strategic partnerships and grassroots training, Clayton is setting a global standard for digital resilience.
How we reported this
In an era of rising digital threats, the technology ecosystem in Clayton is distinguishing itself on the global stage not just through innovation, but through a rigorous commitment to cybersecurity awareness. By integrating comprehensive training across municipal, academic, and community levels, the city has developed a multi-layered approach to digital defense that emphasizes both professional competence and early education.
A Coordinated Approach to Digital Security
The foundation of this effort begins with the Town of Clayton's IT Department, which utilizes the Arctic Wolf program to maintain a vigilant workforce. Employees receive frequent, bite-sized cybersecurity lessons-typically lasting between 3 and 5 minutes-designed to help them identify and neutralize threats like suspicious emails and text messages. This granular approach ensures that security remains a persistent priority rather than an occasional lecture.
This philosophy extends to higher education. Clayton State University mandates cybersecurity awareness training for all users accessing information systems. This policy is aligned with broader requirements from the Board of Regents and the USG IT Handbook, while also ensuring compliance with the executive order issued by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, which requires state employees to complete semiannual training. To reinforce these lessons, the university encourages the adoption of key best practices across the local tech community, including the implementation of multi-factor authentication, the use of strong unique passwords via managers, and the immediate reporting of suspected phishing attempts to the campus HUB.
Building the Pipeline of Future Talent
Clayton’s focus on cybersecurity is also defined by a forward-looking commitment to the next generation of professionals. Recognizing that the local tech ecosystem depends on a steady pipeline of skilled individuals, Clayton County has partnered with Clayton State University to launch a Cybersecurity Certification Program. This initiative includes a coding boot camp specifically tailored for young adults between the ages of 18 and 24, providing them with the necessary credentials and practical skills to enter the workforce with a strong foundation in threat mitigation.
Furthermore, the university hosts the GenCyber Teens Program, which offers a free, 5-day non-residential camp for students in grades 8 through 12. This program aims to demystify cybersecurity concepts and increase local awareness of career opportunities in the field. By fostering these early interactions with core security concepts, the city is effectively building a culture where digital hygiene and defensive programming are considered fundamental competencies. Whether through continuous professional micro-training or youth-focused certification paths, Clayton continues to prioritize a resilient, informed tech community.
