Residents across Croydon are beginning to see the practical results of the borough's long-term digital strategy, as new smart technology integrates into the fabric of the local urban landscape. Through a series of initiatives tied to the broader Growth Zone programme, the council is working to improve how people interact with their local environment, from the way they wait for a bus to how they move through areas undergoing major regeneration.

Smart Bus Shelters and Digital Connectivity

A significant shift in local public transport infrastructure is underway through a 10-year partnership with VALO Smart City. This project involves the installation of 185 smart bus shelters throughout the borough. Beyond providing shelter, these units function as digital hubs, offering residents access to free Wi-Fi and real-time bus information. According to the council, these shelters also play a role in environmental monitoring, as they are equipped with air quality sensors and traffic monitoring technology, providing data that supports the wider digital connectivity goals outlined in the council's strategy.

Supporting Local Growth and Digital Ecosystems

The implementation of smart technology is closely linked to the Growth Zone initiative, which seeks to foster a robust Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem. By working with partners such as TMRW Tech Hub and Digital Catapult, the council is developing an open data platform designed to support further technological advancement. This effort builds upon the foundation established by the InnOvaTe Programme, an initiative completed in March 2023. That project, led by the South London Partnership, saw the successful pilot of 48 different IoT ideas across five boroughs, focusing on driving economic growth and addressing the local climate emergency.

Future Impacts on Mobility and Public Services

The council’s approach to technology extends into mobility and public safety. Upgrades to digital CCTV systems are being rolled out, alongside new wayfinding technologies intended to help residents and visitors navigate the borough more easily, particularly in parts of Croydon undergoing significant regeneration. From a financial perspective, the smart city strategy is designed to provide long-term benefits to the community; the bus shelter partnership is projected to generate between £6.75m and £7m in concession revenue. This income is earmarked to help fund ongoing public services, ensuring that the integration of digital tools supports the borough's broader service goals.
