The station, which opened as part of the level-crossing removal project, features a rooftop garden planted with 5,544 native grasses and wildflowers, the first such installation on a station in Victoria. The concrete used in the build contains 0.5 tonnes of recycled soft plastic, a material called Polyrok, diverting 125,000 plastic pieces from landfill, according to the state's Big Build program. On the bus shelter roofs, 121 solar panels are expected to save roughly 85 tonnes of carbon annually, equivalent to the electricity use of more than 10 homes per year.

That kind of system demands expertise in irrigation engineering, landscape management and water-sensitive urban design, skills that weren't top of mind for most infrastructure workers a decade ago.
Job seekers in trades, construction and engineering should expect to see more job advertisements asking for experience with recycled materials, solar integration and low-water landscaping. The Polyrok concrete alone points to a growing need for workers who understand how to source, mix and certify concrete containing plastic waste, a process that requires coordination with recycling facilities and testing labs.
Meanwhile, the 121 solar panels on the bus shelters are a small-scale installation, but the principle is the same as bigger commercial arrays. Solar installation and maintenance technicians are in rising demand across the city as more public and private buildings add rooftop generation. The carbon savings figure, 85 tonnes per year, is a tangible metric that project managers and sustainability officers will increasingly be expected to track and report.
Carbon capture and the industrial workforce
Not all green tech in Deer Park is about stations and gardens. The Deer Park Energy Center in Texas, a separate facility that shares the Deer Park name, is deploying Shell's Cansolv CO₂ capture technology. That system is designed to capture roughly 5 million tonnes of net CO₂ per year, equivalent to 95% of the plant's emissions, and it was selected for federal funding in 2021.
For Deer Park's professional workforce, the energy centre is a reminder that carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) is moving from pilot to commercial scale. Engineers, chemists and project managers with experience in solvent-based capture systems, pipeline transport of CO₂ and geological storage monitoring will be valuable to power companies and industrial emitters alike.
The same is true for the broader workforce. As more facilities adopt Cansolv and similar technologies, there will be demand for plant operators, safety inspectors and compliance officers who understand how to work with captured CO₂ streams. The technology is not simple, it involves chemical solvents, heat integration and strict monitoring to ensure capture rates stay above 90%, but it is increasingly seen as essential for decarbonising gas-fired power.
Professionals looking to enter the field should consider training in chemical process operations, environmental monitoring and regulatory compliance related to carbon markets. The federal funding commitment to the Deer Park Energy Center suggests that government and industry are both betting on CCUS as a long-term solution.
For now, the local job market is already responding. Solar installers, irrigation specialists, landscape architects and materials engineers who can work with recycled content are finding more opportunities. The station project shows that green tech is not a separate industry, it's a set of skills layered into every construction, energy and transport project. Workers who build those skills now will be ahead of the curve as Deer Park continues to retrofit and rebuild.
