Albert Park Lake: Kayaking, Birdwatching, 5km Walks Await
The 5km walking track, free barbecues and adventure playground make the park a standout for a day outside.
How we reported this
Albert Park Lake, just 3km from the CBD, is a go-to for outdoor adventures without leaving the city. The park’s 5km sealed walking and running track offers panoramic skyline views, while the lake supports sailing, canoeing, kayaking, rowing, fishing and birdwatching.
Water activities and wildlife
Boating is allowed from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset. Fishing is permitted for Rainbow Trout and Golden Perch, though Parks Victoria warns the fish are not safe to eat. A Victorian Recreational Fishing Licence is required. Swimming, diving or wading is strictly banned, and access to Mud Island, Gunn Island and storm water ponds is prohibited.
Birdwatchers can spot waterbirds from the shore, while rowers and sailors share the lake with cyclists and dog walkers on the path. The park’s location makes it a rare mix of nature and skyline views.
Picnics and playgrounds
Nine picnic areas with free electric barbecues, shelters and playgrounds are scattered around the park. The adventure playground at Aughtie Drive is designed for children aged 2 to 12. Parks Victoria manages the site year-round, and the barbecues operate on a first-come basis.
For families or groups, the park offers a full day out: a morning walk or bike ride, a barbecue lunch, and afternoon play. The 5km loop is ideal for joggers and cyclists, with few interruptions and wide views of the lake.
Parks Victoria recommends checking weather conditions before heading out, especially for boating. No bookings are needed for the barbecues or playgrounds, and parking is available at multiple points around the lake.
