Altona's Coastal Reserves and Trails Deliver Year-Round Outdoor Adventures

Altona Coastal Park is a 70-100ha saltmarsh and seagrass reserve located 11 km from Melbourne's CBD, featuring the Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail for walking and cycling.

Altona Coastal Park and Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail

The reserve covers between 70 and 100 hectares of saltmarsh and seagrass habitat. The Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail runs through the park and supports both walking and cycling. Visitors use the trail to move along the coastline while staying within the reserve boundaries.

Altona Beach and the Pier

Altona Beach attracts kitesurfers and people taking part in general beach activities. A 310-meter-long Y-shaped pier was installed in summer 2023. The pier provides views of the city skyline and Port Phillip Bay and is used for strolls and fishing.

Truganina Park Trail and Laverton Creek Spit Walk

Truganina Park Trail and Laverton Creek Spit Walk sit at the corner of Wilga Avenue and Queen Street. The trails give local residents a walking option that connects parkland and creek areas without requiring travel outside Altona.

Altona CSR Landcare Reserve

The Altona CSR Landcare Reserve occupies the site of a former sand quarry that has been rehabilitated. It remains open year-round except on Total Fire Ban days. The reserve contains native orchids, more than 100 bird species and exposed quarry faces that can be explored on foot.

These locations share a focus on outdoor movement through coastal and rehabilitated landscapes. People can combine time on the pier with walks along the Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail or shift to the trails at Wilga Avenue and Queen Street on the same outing. The reserve adds an inland option when beach conditions are less suitable.
