Bookings for neighborhood tours in Broadmeadows climbed to 1,800 participants last week, according to records kept by the city tourism office.
July 12 marks the midpoint of summer when daylight lingers past 8 p.m., giving workers on Maple Street and families near the river more hours to step outside after dinner instead of remaining at home.
The Broadmeadows Historical Society runs its daily heritage walk from the corner of Elm Street and Oak Avenue through the Riverside District, stopping at the restored 1924 firehouse and the old grain elevator on Wharf Road. The Urban Trails program sends cyclists from Oakwood Heights along the harbor path that passes the Broadmeadows Clock Tower on Central Avenue before ending at the ferry landing.
Heritage routes in the city core
Guides on the Elm Street walk point out the 1898 brick row houses that survived the 1972 redevelopment and the corner bakery that still uses the original coal oven. Riders in the bike group receive helmets and a map that marks the exact spot where the 1931 streetcar line once turned onto 42nd Street. Both outings last 90 minutes and require advance registration through the tourism office website.
City data released on July 10 showed a 45 percent rise in tour attendance compared with the same week in 2025, with average ticket prices listed at $28 for adults and $15 for anyone under 12. The same report noted that 320 people joined the evening bike rides in the first six days of July.
Nature based outings near the harbor
The harbor sunset paddle, offered by the same Urban Trails group, departs from the dock at Pier 9 every Thursday at 7:15 p.m. and returns by 8:45 p.m. Participants bring their own water bottles while the outfit supplies life vests and single or tandem kayaks. Slots fill within 48 hours of opening each week.
Anyone who wants to join should check the Broadmeadows tourism office site for remaining dates through August 31 or call the walk-up desk at City Hall Plaza before noon on the day of the tour. Spots are released at 9 a.m. each Monday for the following seven days.
