On a quiet slope at 7 Prospect Hill Drive, a Queen Anne-style Federation mansion built in 1900 has become the public art gallery for the City of Darebin. The Bundoora Homestead Art Centre, set in lush gardens that double as a sanctuary for birdlife, offers free entry to contemporary visual arts and craft exhibitions, artist talks, workshops, and the biennial Darebin Art Prize.
The building’s history is layered. Constructed on the lands of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people, who have lived on Country for more than 60,000 years, it began as a family home. Later it served as a convalescent farm for war veterans and a mental repatriation hospital until 1993. After restoration, the homestead reopened as an arts space in 2001. Today it is registered by Heritage Victoria and certified by the National Trust.
What’s on and when to visit
The centre is open Wednesday to Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm. (Note: It is closed on Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays.) Admission is free. Visitors can walk through the mansion’s galleries, stop in the café, browse the gallery shop, use the community library, or explore the makers space. Tram Route 86, Stop 62, provides access, and there are 40 off-street parking spaces.

Arts, education, and community
The centre hosts an annual public education program that includes artist talks and workshops. The biennial Darebin Art Prize draws contemporary artists from across the region. The site also features a café operating Wednesday to Friday 11 am to 3 pm and Saturday 10 am to 3 pm. (Payment is cashless.) The entire venue is wheelchair accessible. The gardens, verdant and bird-filled, provide a quiet counterpoint to the gallery interior.
