Croydon's Arts Venues Launch New Cultural Programs as London Borough

Croydon received the title of London Borough of Culture in 2023, which included the Music Heritage Trail, a play about composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and a Hip-Hop 50th anniversary celebration.

Music and Cultural Programmes

The 2023 London Borough of Culture designation brought forward events such as the Music Heritage Trail and a Hip-Hop 50th anniversary celebration. A separate production focused on the life of composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor formed part of the same programme. These activities drew on Croydon’s existing creative infrastructure, including its status as a Creative Enterprise Zone named in 2017.

Performing Arts Venues

Fairfield Halls opened in 1962 and serves as the borough’s main arts venue. It contains a concert hall and the Ashcroft Theatre, and it is home to the London Mozart Players. The venue has hosted performances by the Beatles and Johnny Cash. The BRIT School, located within the Creative Enterprise Zone, has produced musicians including Adele and Amy Winehouse.

Cinema Experiences

The David Lean Cinema and the seasonal Croydon Rooftop Cinema provide alternative and art-house screenings. These venues form part of Croydon’s local film offerings and operate alongside the larger performance spaces at Fairfield Halls.

Sports and Community Links

Crystal Palace Football Club, known as The Eagles, plays its Premier League home matches at Selhurst Park near Croydon. The club has remained in the top division since 2012, adding a further element to the borough’s entertainment calendar.

A new creative hub is scheduled to open in 2025 inside the Centrale Shopping Centre.
