Preston Launches Family Theatre, Festivals, Markets Through December

Preston’s Summer Family Theatre opens July 31 at Miller Park with outdoor performances including Pinocchio that continue through August at prices that are often free or low-cost.

Local families have long used these timed events to mark the shift from school holidays into autumn, and the pattern repeats each year with the same venues and formats. The schedule sits alongside the city’s established weekend routines such as the Saturday 9am Preston Park Run covering 5km in Avenham Park and the monthly Maker’s Market held on the second Saturday.

Summer into autumn line-up

The Encounter Festival arrives in September with street performers and live music filling central spaces. Earlier in the year the Preston Caribbean Carnival takes place in May and the Jazz & Improvisation Festival occupies weekends in June, giving the city a sequence of outdoor programmes that run from spring through early autumn.

These events draw on the same parks and streets each season, so residents know the locations in advance and can plan around them without new travel arrangements.

Winter markets and year-round trails

Christmas Markets operate from late November until Christmas Eve, selling local artisan gifts, festive foods and live entertainment. The 150-year-old Easter Egg Rolling tradition at Avenham Park on Easter Monday shows the same continuity at the opposite end of the year.

Outside the calendar events, the 21-mile Guild Wheel remains open every day for cycling and walking, while Brockholes Nature Reserve and Turbary Woods provide year-round access to green space. Visitors can combine a market visit with a short stretch of the Guild Wheel or a stop at one of the nature reserves on the same day.
