Altona Council Offers Free Group Fitness Classes at Local Facilities
From aqua aerobics at the Altona Civic Pool to weekend bootcamps at Altona Meadows Recreation Reserve, here's everything you need to know about getting fit through your local council.
How we reported this
Hobsons Bay City Council is running more than 60 group fitness sessions per week across its network of publicly managed facilities, and most residents have no idea they exist.
With winter well underway and the shorter, colder days pushing people indoors, council-run classes offer something the private gym market often can't: subsidised pricing, structured programming, and the kind of neighbourhood familiarity that keeps attendance up past the six-week mark. Public health researchers consistently flag social accountability as a primary driver of sustained exercise habits, and group classes built around a regular cast of local faces deliver exactly that.
Altona's council facilities stretch across several distinct precincts. The Altona Civic Pool on Civic Parade runs an eight-week aqua aerobics block on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9:15am, with a casual rate of $8.50 per session or a concession card rate of $5.20. The Altona Meadows Recreation Reserve hosts weekend bootcamp sessions every Saturday at 7:30am through the Hobsons Bay Active Living program, a council initiative launched in March 2024 that coordinates fitness programming across parks and indoor venues simultaneously. The Newport Community Hub on Mason Street rounds out the main network with a Thursday-evening yoga flow class, running from 6:30pm to 7:30pm, pitched squarely at people finishing the working day.
What's on offer and what it costs
The Hobsons Bay Active Living program currently lists 14 distinct class formats, ranging from low-impact stretch sessions designed for over-65s to high-intensity interval training circuits for adults under 50. Pricing follows a tiered model. Casual drop-in attendance runs between $8 and $12 depending on the class type. An eight-week block pass, available at the Altona Civic Pool reception desk and online through the council's MyHobsonsBay portal, costs $55 for general admission and $34 for holders of a Health Care Card. Annual memberships to the broader facility network start at $420, which works out to roughly $8 a week if used consistently across 52 weeks.
The council's most recent participation data, published in its 2025-26 Community Sport and Recreation Report, showed group fitness attendance at Hobsons Bay facilities up 18 percent compared to the same period in 2023-24. Aqua classes specifically saw a 27 percent jump in the 55-and-over demographic. Those numbers reflect a broader pattern playing out in mid-sized councils across Victoria: when the price barrier drops, attendance climbs. The Altona Civic Pool session on Tuesday mornings routinely draws between 22 and 30 participants, close to its 35-person pool capacity.
How to get started
Booking varies by venue and class type. Some sessions, particularly the Saturday bootcamp at Altona Meadows Recreation Reserve, are drop-in friendly with no advance registration required. Others, including the Newport yoga class and the Pilates reformer sessions held at the Cherry Lake Active Hub on Millers Road, require booking at least 48 hours ahead through the MyHobsonsBay portal or by calling the council's Active Living hotline on (03) 9932 1000 between 8:30am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.
First-timers should bring a water bottle and arrive five minutes early, instructors at council facilities are generally trained to accommodate mixed fitness levels in the same class, but a quick word before the session starts helps. The Altona Civic Pool also runs a free 30-minute orientation for people returning to exercise after injury or illness, available by appointment through the front desk.
Classes from the second half of Term 3, starting 28 July, are now open for enrolment. The council is also trialling a new Tuesday-evening strength and conditioning class at Cherry Lake Active Hub beginning 5 August, targeted at adults aged 30 to 55. Details are on the Hobsons Bay City Council website. For anyone uncertain about which class suits their current fitness level or health circumstances, the council website recommends speaking with a local GP or exercise physiologist before enrolling.
