Altona Locals Discover Three Free Saturday Morning Parkrun Routes
Altona locals are signing up for free Saturday morning runs at three established parkrun sites scattered across the suburb's parks and foreshore.
How we reported this

The Altona Coastal Path parkrun recorded 214 finishers on 4 July 2026, its highest single-week turnout since the event launched.
Residents report turning to these timed 5-kilometre runs as a low-cost way to maintain fitness routines through the colder months, when indoor classes often fill quickly and daylight hours shrink. The events run every Saturday at 8am regardless of weather, giving participants a fixed weekly commitment that many say helps them leave their homes rather than stay inside.
Two waterfront routes draw the biggest crowds
The Altona Beach course starts at the car park on Pier Street and follows the shared path past the boat ramp before looping back along the sand edge. Runners share the route with dog walkers and cyclists, and the flat terrain suits beginners and faster competitors alike. A second option operates at Cherry Lake Reserve on Queen Street, where the course circles the lake twice on compacted gravel paths and passes the playground near the western car park. Both locations provide free timed results uploaded the same day through the parkrun app.
Altona Sports Centre on Millers Road hosts a third weekly event that began in February 2025 and now averages 165 participants. The course uses the oval and adjacent paths, finishing near the centre's main entrance where volunteers record times. All three sites remain free to enter, though runners must register once online beforehand.
Numbers show steady local growth
Official parkrun records list 47 events held at the Altona Beach site through June 2026, with cumulative participation exceeding 8,400 runs. Average weekly attendance across the three Altona locations has risen from 142 in early 2025 to 189 this winter. The next events occur on 11 July at all three venues, with registration available at parkrun.com.au before participants arrive.
Anyone new to the format should download the parkrun barcode in advance, arrive 15 minutes early for a volunteer briefing, and wear layers that can be tied around the waist once the run begins. Local medical advice remains the first step for anyone with existing health conditions before starting regular timed runs.
