Berwick Residents Practice Yoga at Dawn in Two Popular Parks
Berwick residents head outdoors at first light to practice yoga and meditation in two key parks this summer.
How we reported this
Berwick Hill Park now draws dozens of people each dawn for yoga sessions on its east-facing slope. The park sits at the corner of Oak Avenue and Hilltop Drive, where the sun clears the treeline around 5:45 a.m. this month.
The trend tracks with longer daylight hours that began after the June solstice. City records show outdoor fitness permits issued for Berwick parks increased from 87 in May to 142 in June 2026. Local wellness groups report that morning slots fill first because temperatures stay below 18 degrees Celsius until 7 a.m.
Two reliable locations
Berwick Hill Park offers a flat clearing large enough for twenty mats along its upper ridge. The site includes a water fountain that runs from 5 a.m. and a small parking area on Oak Avenue that opens at dawn. Further east, the East End Greenway along River Road provides a quieter stretch of grass between the footbridge and the old boathouse. The Greenway trailhead sits at the end of Willow Lane and stays open twenty-four hours.
Both spots belong to the Berwick Parks Department network. The department added new signage last month directing visitors to the sunrise side of each park. A July 2025 usage count found 340 people entered Berwick Hill Park before 7 a.m. on weekdays, up from 210 the previous year.
Practical steps
Participants should arrive with a mat, water bottle and light layer. The Berwick Wellness Collective runs a free drop-in yoga circle at Berwick Hill Park every Tuesday and Thursday starting at 6 a.m. No registration is required. Those who prefer the Greenway can follow the posted route map near the Willow Lane entrance that marks the best meditation benches facing the water.
Weather checks on the city app help avoid sudden rain. Sessions typically last forty-five minutes, ending before commuter traffic builds on River Road.
