Collingwood Council Launches Free Fitness Programs for 65+ Residents
Collingwood City Council has expanded its no-cost exercise sessions for residents aged 65 and older across multiple neighbourhood sites.
How we reported this
Collingwood City Council began offering free senior fitness programs this month at two central venues, with classes running three mornings each week through December.
The expansion comes as neighbourhood residents seek structured ways to maintain mobility without added expense. Council records show steady growth in the number of older adults living alone in Collingwood, and staff have noted increased inquiries about group activities since the start of the year.
Venues and Schedules
Classes at the Collingwood Community Hub on Smith Street focus on chair-based strength work and light cardio, while sessions at the Collingwood Leisure Centre on Turnbull Street include outdoor balance drills on the adjacent lawn. Both locations run Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings from 9:30 to 10:30.
Participants can also join a weekly walking group that starts at Victoria Park on Hoddle Street and follows the local river path for 30 minutes before returning for stretching. All equipment is supplied on site.
Participation Numbers and Next Steps
Council data from the 2025 program year recorded 312 residents aged 65 and older completing at least eight sessions, with average attendance per class reaching 28 people. No fees apply, though registration is required in advance through the council’s online portal or by calling the community services line.
Residents interested in joining can visit the Collingwood Town Hall customer service desk on Wellington Street during business hours or check the council website for updated timetables before the next intake opens on 20 July 2026. Those with specific health considerations are advised to speak with their regular doctor before starting any new routine.
