Collingwood Residents Build Community Through Neighborhood Walking Groups
Collingwood residents are turning to neighbourhood walking groups as a simple way to build regular exercise into daily routines.
How we reported this
Collingwood residents formed three new walking groups last month, with the first meeting on 15 June drawing 22 participants at the intersection of Smith Street and Wellington Street.
Interest in group walks has grown because many locals report irregular schedules that make solo gym visits difficult, and recent city data shows only 38 percent of adults in the postcode meet recommended weekly activity targets.
The Collingwood Active Living Initiative, run from the Collingwood Town Hall on Hoddle Street, already lists four established routes that pass through Peel Street Park and end near the Merri Creek trail. A separate program at the Collingwood Leisure Centre on Cromwell Street offers free maps and safety vests for groups that register by the end of July.
City records released in April 2026 recorded 1,840 participants across 47 registered walking groups in the Yarra area, with average group sizes of 18 people and no fees charged for basic listings.
Pick a route and set a time
Choose a flat 3-kilometre loop that starts and finishes at a familiar landmark such as the Collingwood Station forecourt. Schedule the first walk for a weekday evening at 6:30 pm so working residents can join after 5 pm finishes at nearby offices on Johnston Street.
Post details on the Collingwood Community Noticeboard two weeks ahead, including the exact meeting spot, expected duration of 45 minutes, and a note that dogs on leads are welcome. Bring a basic first-aid kit and share a group contact number before the walk begins.
Keep the group going
After the third walk, collect email addresses and set a recurring calendar invite for the same day each week. Rotate the lead walker so no single person carries the organisational load, and check the Collingwood Leisure Centre noticeboard for free water refill stations along the route.
Track attendance on a simple shared spreadsheet and adjust pace or distance if new members join. Residents who complete eight consecutive walks qualify for a free coffee voucher at the café inside the Collingwood Town Hall.
