Croydon Shoppers Stretch Food Budgets Further With Market Shopping

Shoppers at Surrey Street Market in central Croydon paid 89p per kilogram for carrots and 65p for onions on 9 July, figures that show how street trading keeps core vegetables under £1 a kilo while supermarket equivalents sit 30 per cent higher.

Food costs across the borough rose 4.2 per cent in the year to May 2026, according to Croydon Council’s cost-of-living dashboard, pushing households on Universal Credit to cut fresh produce first. Local nutrition workers report a 22 per cent jump in enquiries about cheap meal planning since the start of the year.

Market routes and community kitchens

Regulars at Surrey Street Market fill reusable bags with loose carrots, cabbage and potatoes before 10am to beat the lunch rush. Two streets away, the East Croydon Food Hub on Cherry Orchard Road runs a Wednesday evening pantry where members pay £3.50 for a bag containing rice, tinned tomatoes and seasonal greens sourced from surplus stock. The same hub offers a free 45-minute session on portion scaling that 38 people attended last month.

Numbers that add up

A single £20 spend at the market on 9 July bought enough carrots, onions, cabbage and potatoes for eight portions of vegetable stew when cooked with 75p worth of dried lentils from the nearby Asian grocery on London Road. That works out at £2.50 per serving, compared with £4.80 for a ready meal of similar size from a high-street chain. The council’s 2025 residents’ survey found that 61 per cent of respondents who shopped at least twice a month at Surrey Street Market reported spending less on takeaways.
