Dandenong Outdoor Pools Draw Swimmers as Winter Lap Sessions Move Outside
Dandenong residents are heading to local outdoor facilities for structured lap sessions as winter routines shift outdoors.
How we reported this

Dandenong's public works department opened two new lap lanes at the Dandenong Park outdoor pool on Clow Street last month, drawing 420 swimmers in the first week of July alone.
Winter temperatures in the low teens have pushed more locals toward consistent water exercise, and the city’s active wellness programs now list lap swimming as a core offering at parks and reserves. Council records show participation in outdoor fitness activities rose 18 percent between May and June this year.
Two spots drawing daily crowds
The Dandenong Park pool on Clow Street maintains 50-metre lanes open from 6am, while the rock pools at Greaves Reserve off Hemming Street offer shorter 25-metre sections carved into the creek bed that stay at a steady 18 degrees. Both sites sit within the same 3-kilometre stretch of central Dandenong and accept the same $4.50 day pass issued by Greater Dandenong City Council.
Park staff at Greaves Reserve added lane ropes and starting blocks in late June after complaints about overcrowding at peak morning hours. The Dandenong Park site added solar heating mats last winter that now keep water above 20 degrees even on the coldest mornings.
Practical steps for new swimmers
Swimmers can check same-day lane availability through the council’s online portal or by calling the parks office before 8am. Those new to lap swimming are directed to the 7am beginner slot at Dandenong Park, which limits groups to eight people and supplies kickboards at no extra cost. The next scheduled maintenance closure for both sites is listed for 15 August.
