Deer Park Launches Free Fitness Programs for 600+ Seniors
The city now runs no-cost group exercise sessions for residents aged 60 and older at two fixed venues.
How we reported this
Deer Park City Council opened free senior fitness classes on July 1 at the Recreation Center on Elm Street and the Pavilion at Maple Drive.
The move follows a March 2026 resident survey that showed 68 percent of Deer Park adults over 60 wanted low-cost group activities to stay mobile. Council records list the budget at $42,000 for instructors and mats through December.
Classes run three mornings a week. Chair yoga meets Tuesdays at 10 a.m. inside the Recreation Center gym. Balance and strength sessions take place Thursdays at 9 a.m. on the Pavilion floor. Walking groups depart Fridays at 8 a.m. from the same Pavilion and loop through the Oak Grove neighborhood before returning.
Two venues, steady schedule
Both sites sit within one mile of the central bus stop at Birch and Main. The Recreation Center provides indoor space with air conditioning. The Pavilion offers shaded outdoor areas and restrooms open during class hours. Staff from the Parks Department check attendance each session and report numbers to the city clerk.
Numbers and next steps
By July 8 the city had logged 187 unique participants across the first eight sessions. Private studios in Deer Park charge $12 to $18 per class for similar formats. Residents can sign up at the Recreation Center front desk or call 555-0192 before arriving. Next month the council will add a second walking route that starts at the library branch on Willow Street.
Anyone 60 or older can attend without prior registration, though space at each class is capped at 25 people. Participants are advised to bring water and wear supportive shoes.
