Doncaster Shift Workers Combat Sleep Deprivation With Light Therapy
Doncaster employees on rotating rosters are turning to timed light exposure and neighbourhood routines to protect rest amid demanding schedules.
How we reported this
More than 1,800 Doncaster residents working night and rotating shifts at the Royal Infirmary and nearby rail depots report average sleep durations below six hours on workdays, according to internal health data reviewed this month.
The issue has gained urgency because staffing shortages at the infirmary on Thorne Road and expanded freight operations in Hexthorpe have lengthened shift cycles since the start of 2026. Local employers have added weekend and late-evening duties without adjusting recovery support, leaving workers to manage fatigue on their own time.
Staff at the Royal Infirmary on Thorne Road and drivers based at the Hexthorpe rail yard have begun using the Doncaster Community Wellness Hub on Silver Street for group sessions on sleep timing. The hub runs a six-week programme that pairs shift workers with local physiotherapists and offers discounted blackout kits at £18 each.
Local patterns and measured effects
A March 2026 audit by the Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group found 42 percent of surveyed shift workers at the two sites met criteria for clinical sleep debt. The same review recorded a 19 percent rise in GP visits for fatigue-related complaints among Hexthorpe residents compared with the previous year.
Steps workers are taking now
Participants in the Silver Street sessions start with a fixed 90-minute wind-down window before bed, regardless of shift end time. They keep bedrooms between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius and use the same blackout curtains sold at the hub. Many also schedule a 20-minute outdoor walk along Sandall Beat Road within two hours of waking to reset their body clock.
Those on back-to-back nights limit caffeine after 2 a.m. and keep one consistent meal time each calendar day. The wellness hub tracks attendance through July and plans to publish follow-up sleep logs in September. Workers who complete the programme receive a £25 voucher for the Dome leisure centre to encourage continued light exercise.
Anyone experiencing persistent sleep loss is advised to book a check-up with their GP before changing medication or supplements.
