Eltham Gears Up for a Season of Local Fun Runs, Charity Walks and Community Fitness Events
From the Diamond Creek Trail to Fitzsimons Lane, residents are lacing up for a packed schedule of active events this winter.
How we reported this
Eltham’s calendar is filling fast with fun runs, charity walks and community fitness gatherings, as local organisers roll out a series of events on trails, ovals and riverside parks throughout July and August. With winter at its peak, these events aim to get bodies moving and bring neighbours together outdoors.
The surge in scheduled activities reflects a renewed interest in group exercise and social wellness, which many local organisers trace back to the isolation and uncertainty of recent years. As the days lengthen and community confidence returns, organisers see these gatherings as essential to Eltham’s robust wellness culture-and a chance to foster charitable causes as well.
Local Landmarks Set the Pace
The Diamond Creek Trail Fun Run on Sunday, 20 July is expected to attract several hundred participants, winding its way from Eltham Lower Park past the iconic trestle bridge and looping back via Main Road. Registrations for the 10km event-organised by the Eltham Community Health Alliance-opened on Monday and cost $28 for adults, with a free kids’ dash along the riverside path. Meanwhile, Rotary Club of Eltham is hosting its annual Charity Walk on 4 August, starting at Alistair Knox Park and following the Yarra River pathways. All entry fees (adults $22, concessions $10) go towards supporting local youth mental health programs.
The Eltham Leisure Centre on Brougham Street will be the base for the new Winter Wellness Expo (27 July), featuring outdoor yoga, pilates, and group HIIT classes on the adjacent oval. Centre manager Kelly Andrews said last year’s pilot saw more than 250 residents take part, and expects even higher turnout thanks to a social media push and word-of-mouth on Eltham Facebook groups.
Packed Calendar and Community Impact
National data from Parkrun shows a steady uptick in attendance for open-access group runs; in Eltham, the Saturday 8am run from Edendale Farm drew a record 163 finishers in June, up from an average of 110 per event last winter. Organisers of the Diamond Creek Trail Fun Run have cited forecasts for up to 400 participants this year-a 20% jump on 2025 figures.
Eltham’s active events often combine fitness and fundraising. The Rotary walk’s proceeds are earmarked for Headspace Greensborough's mental health programs, while last year’s fun run generated over $6,000 for local schools and sports clubs. For casual participants, joining the Saturday Parkrun remains free; those entering ticketed runs or group fitness expos can expect entry fees from $15 to $30, depending on age and event length.
Community fitness events are scheduled into September, with the Eltham Runners Club launching its monthly mixed-terrain 5k from Fitzsimons Lane Reserve on 14 September-places are booked via their website and are expected to fill quickly. Organisers urge participants to register early and remind locals that many events welcome all abilities, from strollers to serious racers. For updated dates, routes and registration details, check the council’s Active Eltham portal or visit local event boards at the library and leisure centre. Those unsure where to begin can join weekly free meet-ups at Alistair Knox Park every Thursday at 6pm, or consult their GP for personal exercise advice before starting a new program.
