Essendon Residents Access 5+ Free Outdoor Gyms Across Parks
Residents can access equipment and circuits at multiple parks without paying fees or joining clubs.
How we reported this
Essendon now maintains seven free outdoor fitness stations across its parks, with new pull-up bars and resistance equipment installed at two sites this spring.
Interest in these no-cost options has grown as local households face higher living costs and seek ways to stay active without gym memberships that average $45 a week.
Stations at Napier Street and Holmes Road
The main circuit at Essendon Recreation Reserve on Napier Street includes eight stations with medicine balls, parallel bars and a 400-metre marked running loop that opens at sunrise. A second setup at Aberfeldie Park on Holmes Road added leg-press machines and balance beams in March 2025, drawing steady morning users from the surrounding streets. Both sites sit within a ten-minute walk of the Essendon train station and connect to the council’s Active Essendon walking maps updated last year.
Essendon City Council records show the outdoor stations recorded 28,400 visits in the 2025 financial year, up from 21,100 the year before. The equipment carries no usage fees and requires no bookings, though the council asks visitors to wipe surfaces after use and to avoid peak hours between 7 and 9 am on weekdays.
How to start this week
Begin at the Napier Street reserve with body-weight circuits listed on the park notice boards, then move to the Holmes Road site for resistance work. Bring water and check the council website for any temporary closures before heading out. Those unsure of form can join the free Saturday morning orientation sessions run by the Essendon Wellness Network at 8 am near the reserve entrance.
