Cycling routes safe for families and beginners open up Footscray parks
Marked paths through local green spaces now cater to new riders and those with children.
How we reported this

Footscray Council completed new signage and barrier adjustments on three cycling routes in May 2026, opening flat paths through Footscray Park and along the western edge of the Maribyrnong River reserve for family groups and first-time riders.
The changes respond to rising local demand for low-stress outdoor activity after winter programs at the Footscray Community Centre reported waitlists for beginner sessions. Residents near Barkly Street and Nicholson Street have noted more families using bikes on weekends instead of driving to distant trails.
Key routes through Footscray
One route starts at the southern entrance of Footscray Park off Ballarat Road and follows a 2.8-kilometre loop with separated lanes past the playground and picnic shelters. A second path runs parallel to Gordon Street for 1.9 kilometres, linking the river reserve to the small car park behind the Footscray Market. Both sections received fresh line marking and lowered kerbs at two intersections last month.
The Footscray Bike Library, based at the community centre on Napier Street, supplies 20 child seats and 15 balance bikes for loan at no charge on Saturdays. Volunteers from the same group run a monthly skills session on the park loop, limited to 12 participants and booked through the centre’s front desk.
Practical details for new riders
Council records show 340 family cycling permits issued between February and June 2026, up from 210 in the same period last year. Helmet hire at the library costs $2 for the day. Riders are advised to start before 10am on weekdays to avoid delivery trucks on the Gordon Street section.
Parents can combine a short ride with a stop at the water fountain near the park’s cricket nets or the shaded benches along the river path. The routes connect directly to the Footscray Station underpass, allowing families to arrive by train and avoid street traffic altogether.
