Footscray Upgrades Cycling Routes With New Markings for Families
New markings and path upgrades on local trails give parents and new riders clear options close to home.
How we reported this

Footscray Park installed fresh wayfinding signs and widened entry points on its main loop this month, giving families and first-time cyclists a flat 3.2-kilometre circuit that stays inside park boundaries.
Residents have reported higher foot and bike traffic on weekends since the start of winter school holidays, when many households look for low-cost outdoor activities that keep children moving without needing advanced skills or long commutes. The changes respond to repeated requests logged at council meetings for routes that separate bikes from motor traffic and include regular rest spots.
Named routes and local groups
The upgraded loop starts at the Nicholson Street entrance to Footscray Park and runs past the playground before circling the oval. A second option begins at the Ballarat Road underpass and follows the shared path behind the Footscray Community Centre, where the Footscray Active Families program runs free Saturday morning rides for children aged five to twelve. Both segments stay away from major roads and connect to drinking fountains and shaded benches every kilometre.
The Footscray Bicycle User Group, based at the community centre on Barkly Street, supplies volunteer-led beginner sessions on the first Sunday of each month. Riders meet at 9 am near the park rotunda and use the new signage to stay on the inner loop rather than venturing onto busier streets.
Numbers behind the upgrades
Council records show 187 family passes were issued for the park’s bike education area between 1 January and 30 June this year, up from 112 in the same period last year. Helmet hire at the community centre costs five dollars for the day, and the centre added twelve child-sized bikes to its fleet in April. A June safety audit counted thirty-seven new directional arrows and eight additional bollards separating the path from the oval car park.
Families can check daily path conditions on the council website or pick up a printed map at the Footscray Library branch on Paisley Street. Riders are advised to start on the inner park loop before attempting the slightly longer Ballarat Road section, and to carry water even on short rides given limited shade near the underpass.
