Heidelberg's Outdoor Pools and Rock Formations Attract Summer Lap Swimmers
Heidelberg residents are heading to maintained outdoor pools and natural rock formations for structured lap sessions this summer.
How we reported this

Heidelberg lap swimmers logged more than 18,000 entries at city outdoor facilities in the first week of July 2026.
The increase tracks with longer daylight hours and the push from local wellness groups to use open-air sites for fitness instead of indoor gyms during peak heat periods.
Two Heidelberg spots drawing daily lap crowds
The Neuenheim Freibad on Im Neuenheimer Feld maintains eight 50-metre lanes that open at 6:30 each morning. Swimmers share the water with the Heidelberg Aquatics Club, which runs coached sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays. A short distance east, the rock pools cut into the riverbank near the Theodor-Heuss-Brücke give a 200-metre natural circuit when water levels stay below 1.8 metres. Local runners often combine a 400-metre loop on the adjacent path with repeats in the pools before work.
Entry to the Neuenheim Freibad costs 5.20 euros for adults on weekdays and 3.80 euros after 4 pm. The rock pools remain free but require users to follow posted river-level warnings issued by the city environment office. Both sites sit within a 12-minute cycle from the Hauptbahnhof on the new Neckar-Radweg extension completed in March.
Practical steps before the next session
Check the daily water-temperature update posted on the Heidelberg Sport website before 7 am. Bring a printed or digital copy of the current river safety bulletin when heading to the rock pools. Anyone new to open-water lengths should start with the marked 100-metre section at Neuenheim before moving to the longer rock-pool route. The city wellness desk at the Rathaus offers free lane-time maps updated each Monday.
