Lace Up in Keilor: Fun Runs, Charity Walks and Fitness Events Set for July and August
Organisers across Keilor are ramping up for a packed calendar of community fitness events, from riverside fun runs to group workouts in local parks.
How we reported this
Keilor residents aiming to boost their fitness and support a good cause will have no shortage of opportunities this winter, with a flurry of local fun runs, charity walks and group fitness events scheduled from mid-July through the end of August.
This focus on community-based fitness comes as local health providers and council services encourage more outdoor activity following a period of reduced participation in group events. With winter school holidays underway and temperatures forecast to stay mild, organisers are hoping to see record turnout along tracks and trails throughout Keilor.
Riverside Routes and Community Parks: What’s On
The Keilor Twilight 5K is set to return on 20 July, starting from the Maribyrnong River Trail entrance at Green Gully Reserve. The event, a staple for both dedicated runners and casual families alike, will follow the riverside trail before looping back towards the Keilor Bowls Club on Old Calder Highway. Registration is $15 per adult and free for children under 12, with proceeds going to the Keilor Women’s Shelter.
Meanwhile, the annual Niddrie Avenue Walk for Wellness will see walkers gather outside the Community Hub near Niddrie Street on 4 August. This 7km group walk, organised in partnership with North Keilor Rotary and support from local fitness instructors, aims to raise awareness and funds for youth mental health initiatives. Families, prams, and even leashed dogs are welcome, according to event flyers posted at the Keilor Village Library and the Watergardens Road shopping precinct.
Smaller weekly group workouts are also getting a boost this season. The Friends of Brimbank Park Association has teamed up with Active Keilor to run a free Sunday morning bootcamp series, meeting every week at 8:00am by the Ford Road playground picnic shelter. Last week’s session drew more than 30 participants, ranging from teens to retirees, organisers reported.
Numbers Behind the Movement
Council data published in May indicates participation in local parks-based group fitness sessions is up 22 percent compared with this time last year. A 2025 survey of Keilor residents cited Green Gully Reserve and Brimbank Park as the two most popular open spaces for running and walking groups. Event entry fees are being kept deliberately low-between $0 and $20-after community feedback flagged affordability as a key concern for families and students.
The Keilor Twilight 5K, in particular, has seen registrations grow steadily; last year’s event drew just over 400 finishers, up from 270 in 2023, according to event organisers’ published results. Organising teams are hopeful the expanded promotion, along with family-friendly extras like face painting and live music at the finish, can bring even more locals out despite the chill.
For those interested in joining, pre-registration links and event details have been posted on the Maribyrnong Community Centre’s noticeboard and on the Active Keilor Facebook page. Organisers encourage arriving early to secure parking, especially at the more popular riverside venues, and advise checking for last-minute cancellations in the event of heavy rain. Residents with accessibility needs can contact Keilor Council’s events team for information on companion support or adapted routes. With a packed calendar and renewed momentum, Keilor’s community fitness events look set for their busiest winter yet.
